Take a Tour of Historic Milford, Pa.

Welcome to small, historic Pennsylvanian town – Milford, Pa. While this little town may not look like much, it’s more than what meets the eye and almost 1,000 people are proud to call this place home. Milford isn’t only home to these many citizens, but home to a plethora of unique home-grown businesses. When you visit, you’ll be supporting local business instead of large corporations so let’s take a tour of the must-see Milford gems.

History-Buffs

What you may not know about Milford is the historic history it holds. From influential people staying at the Hotel Fauchére to the heart of the conservation movement, Milford’s roots are more crucial to history than you’d think.

Since its opening in 1852, Hotel Fauchére has been the high-class accommodation spot to many influential people of the time. Some guests you’ll probably recognize include Babe Ruth, and both Presidents Roosevelt and President Kennedy. While the hotel was highly popular back then, it has remained true to its roots and continues to accommodate travelers wanting to visit the town’s quaint borders.

Museums are also a hub for history by housing different artifacts for visitors to examine and learn about. The Columns is a museum on the edge of town that contains one of Milford’s most prized artifacts – the flag that was used to hold President Lincoln’s head after being shot by John Wilkes Booth. Jeannie Gourlay, an actress at the theater, possessed the flag and moved to Milford in 1888 until her death in 1928. Her son then donated the flag to the Historical Society and Museum in 1954.

Lastly, Milford lies at the heart of the conservation movement. It houses Grey Towers National Historic Site, which was home to Gifford Pinchot – first chief of the U.S. Forest Service and governor of Pennsylvania. The land was donated to the U.S. Forest Service by Pinchot’s son, and is used to continue Pinchot’s legacy by delivering educational and public programs.

Local Shops

Milford wouldn’t be a proper small town without the area being covered by local businesses. Whether you’re purchasing food, clothes, antiques or anything in between, you’ll be supporting the local economy.

The Old Lumberyard in town features an antique shop for all your antique needs. And if you’re hungry after all that antiquing, stop by John’s of Arthur Avenue’s pizza parlor in the Old Lumberyard for a slice of some of the best pizza in town.

Food

You wouldn’t have a proper visit without taking advantage of all the incredible food options Milford has to offer. While there are many more restaurants to check out, here are a few of our favorites.

The Naked Bagel takes breakfast and sandwiches to a new level with some of the best bagels around. This store has undergone three ownership changes in recent years, but one thing hasn’t changed: the food quality. If you’re looking for a breakfast sandwich or a regular one, this is the spot to go.

Milford has too many delicious breakfast places to count, but another one that shines is the Waterwheel Café. With a variety of gourmet options from breakfast to lunch, everything that we’ve eaten here has not disappointed.
